Privacy Policy
Last updated 2026-11-03
Liv helps adults find roommates and rooms. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
What we collect
Account: your mobile number (to sign in) and your email address. Email is optional, except to list a room: then you must add one and confirm it with a code we email you.
Sign in with Apple, if you turn it on: the identifier Apple creates for you and Liv, the email Apple shares with it (often a private relay address), and a token we use to ask Apple to end the link when you turn it off or delete your account. Apple doesn’t share your Apple ID password, and we don’t ask Apple for your name.
Waiting list and beta keys: which launch area you are counted in (worked out from the areas you search), when you joined its waiting list, when and how you were let in (a beta key, your area opening, or by us), the beta key you used, and any keys you were given to share and whether each has been used (not who used it). While your area is not open yet, we use your profile and matching answers, without showing them to anyone, to work out whether enough people there would see good matches for it to open.
Identity check: before you can meet people, like, message or buy Premium on Liv, our verification partner Veriff checks a government ID and a live selfie. You can skip it for now to browse rooms; we keep when you skipped, and other members don’t see you or your room until you pass it. Veriff processes the images; we keep the result, the document type, and the name and date of birth on the document (to confirm you are 18 or older and to match room-lease names). We do not keep copies of your ID.
ID-check consent: when you agree to the explanation shown before an ID check, and which version of it you agreed to.
Photo verification (optional): if you take a verification selfie, Amazon Web Services compares the face in it with your main profile photo. The selfie is deleted as soon as it has been compared; we keep only whether it matched, shown as a "Photo verified" badge. This checks that your photos are of you; it is not an identity or age check.
Profile: name, date of birth (we show your age, not the date), gender and pronouns, what you do and, if you add them, your company and your college or university, bio, prompts, photos, and the optional Instagram and LinkedIn links you choose to show.
Matching: your lifestyle and matching answers, budget, move-in dates, whether you’re open to sublets and lease takeovers, the areas you search, and who you like, pass and match with. Some answers (for example about alcohol, cannabis or allergies) are used only for matching and are never shown to others.
Rooms: if you list a room, its details (rent, estimated monthly bills and how they are paid, when it is available, lease length, furnishing, whether you live there and how many others do, what comes with it, such as laundry or a doorman, what the place is like if you pick it (such as exposed brick or a fireplace; used only for Top Picks, never shown to others), and, if you answer, whether pets are allowed and whether it is near public transit and which station; when it was listed, and when you last confirmed it is still available or marked it taken; for a sublet or lease takeover, its dates and your confirmation that your lease or landlord allows it) and photos, its address and map pin (private: used to check it is inside a seeker's search area, and to place the circle about a quarter mile across that shows the room's area on the rooms map; the circle contains the room but isn't centred on it, and the pin itself is never shown), and the lease you upload (private, reviewed by our team only to verify the listing).
Listing import, if you paste a post into the room form: the text you paste (for example, your own post from another site). Before it leaves our servers we try to remove phone numbers, email addresses, links and social handles; anything else in it, including other people's names if your post mentions them, is sent as written, so please leave those out. We use it only to fill in your room form, which you check and edit before anything is posted, and we don't keep or log the pasted text.
Room links: if you list a room, the code in its share link and whether sharing is on. Anyone with a finished profile who opens the link sees your room, your profile and how well you’d match, even if they search other areas. Anyone else, without the app, sees a web page with the room’s photos and details and your first name only: not your photos, profile or address, and the page isn’t listed in search engines; you can turn the link off or get a new one in My Listing. We record when a like came from a link.
Saved searches, if you save one: the rooms filter, its name, whether alerts are on, and which rooms it has already shown you, so we only tell you about new ones.
Room alerts, if you tap Notify Me in a chat whose room is paused or taken: which room and when you asked. We send one notification when the room is back on Liv (and an email if you confirmed an email address), then delete the alert. Unmatching, blocking, turning it off or deleting your account also deletes it. The person whose room it is isn’t told.
Viewings: if you host a room, the viewing times you offer (in person or by video call, a viewing or an open house) and any note you add; if you book one, which time you booked, and when you booked or cancelled it.
Moving in together, if you start or join a household: who is in it, when each person was invited, joined or left, and whether they declined; the room you are moving into; your picks and any wording of your own in the roommate agreement, and when you confirmed it; and your shared move-in checklist (the city, the move-in date and each task: what it is, who it is assigned to, who added and ticked it, when it is due and when it was done).
Google Calendar (optional): if you connect it in Settings, the email address of your Google account and a token, stored encrypted, that lets us add your viewings to your Google Calendar and keep them up to date, and the id of each calendar entry we added.
Rooms you open (for Top Picks, on unless you turn it off): which rooms you open in Discover, how long each stays open and how many of its photos you look at. With the rooms you like, it is used only to choose your daily Top Pick, and is kept 90 days.
Messages you send in chats, and reports and blocks you make.
Messages you send us from the app (help, safety and privacy requests): the subject, your message and the email address you give us to reply to.
Mutual contacts (optional, off by default): if you turn it on, your phone turns each number in your contacts into a one-way fingerprint before sending it. Names and numbers never leave your phone, and others only ever see a count. Turning it off deletes the fingerprints.
Purchases: Apple (on iPhone) or Google Play (on Android) processes payments. We receive what you bought and when it expires, never your card details.
Device: a push notification token, and basic technical logs (such as errors and request times) that keep the service running and secure.
Usage (product analytics, on unless you turn it off): which screens you open and for how long while the app is open, and steps such as signing up, joining the waiting list (and which launch area, such as Brooklyn), using or sharing a beta key (never with whom), opening a section of your profile setup, liking or passing and in which direction, using the rooms filter (which parts of it, such as rent or amenities, never what you picked), opening a room, sharing a room or opening a shared one (where from, never with whom), saving a search or opening a saved one, matching, sending a message (never what it said), opening the paywall and purchases the App Store confirms. It is tied to your Liv account ID, and to your app version and device type. It never includes your messages, answers, photos, report reasons, ID check results or other members' identities. Events from before you sign in (for example, tapping Get started) are added to your account when you sign in. The app sends these to our servers, which pass them to our analytics provider, PostHog, so PostHog does not receive your device's IP address, and we have it set not to work out a location.
Our website (theliv.app): if you join the waitlist, your email address, to tell you when Liv opens in your city. Ask us at any time to remove it. The site sets no cookies and runs no analytics; it loads fonts from Google, which sees your IP address.
What we don't collect
We don't track you across other apps or websites, we don't use advertising identifiers, and we don't run ad networks in the app.
We don't store your precise location from your phone. Rooms have a map pin set by the owner; seekers draw or pick search areas.
How we use it
To run Liv: sign-in, identity checks, showing compatible people, matching, chat and notifications.
If you list a room: from 14 days after you list or last confirm it, and once you haven't used the app for 48 hours, we ask whether it is still available, by notification and email at 6 PM where the room is, up to twice on separate days. If you don't answer, we pause the room (it comes off Discover) 24 hours after the second reminder, until you confirm it again. We record when each reminder was sent and whether Apple, Google or our email provider accepted it, not whether you read it.
To keep members safe: checking photos (for explicit content and, for room photos, that they show a bed and a bathroom; the same check may spot features such as exposed brick, which we suggest to the host and use only for Top Picks) and lease documents, automatically screening chat messages and profile text for harassment, hate, threats and sexual content before they are posted, reviewing reports, and preventing fraud, spam and abuse.
To fill in your room listing from a post you paste, using an AI model (Anthropic's Claude, run on Amazon Web Services). What it fills in is only a draft: nothing is posted until you review it and save.
To provide paid features you buy, and to answer you when you contact us.
To choose your Top Pick: one room a day that is a good roommate fit and within your saved budget and move-in, ordered partly by what the rooms you open and like have in common (their features and rent, never anything about the hosts). It never changes which rooms you can see. Turn it off in Settings → Personalized Top Picks.
To improve matching, using your own activity on Liv. We do not make decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about you solely by automated means.
What other members see
Your first name, age, photos, bio, prompts, occupation, your company and college or university if you choose to show them (each has a Show on my profile switch; off keeps it to you), the lifestyle details shown on cards, your city and move-in timing, a room's details, neighborhood and photos, and its approximate area on the map (a circle about a quarter mile across, never the pin), and any Instagram or LinkedIn link you add. The neighborhoods you search in are used for matching and never shown or sent to others.
If you move in together, everyone in the household sees each other's first name and main photo, even someone you haven't matched with yourself, the room you're moving into, what each person picks in your roommate agreement, and your shared move-in checklist (tasks, who's doing them, who ticked them). The agreement is filled in from your own lifestyle and matching answers (never your tolerance settings or allergies); where everyone's answers match, that option starts agreed (so the others can tell you answered alike); where they differ it says so without showing whose answer was which.
If you host a room and offer viewing times, people you've matched with see those times and you see who booked one.
Never your phone number, email, exact address, map pin, lease, ID, contacts or private answers.
Who we share it with
Service providers who process data for us under contract: Amazon Web Services (hosting, storage, photo and text safety checks, photo verification, and email: codes to confirm your email address, reminders about a room you list, room alerts you ask for, and replies to your messages; and an AI model, Anthropic's Claude on Amazon Bedrock, that fills in a room form from a post you paste, after we try to remove contact details), Twilio (sign-in codes by text), Veriff (identity verification), Apple (Sign in with Apple, if you use it, purchases on iPhone, and Apple Maps for the map on iPhone), Google (purchases through Google Play, notifications through Firebase Cloud Messaging, and Google Maps for the map on Android) and RevenueCat (purchases), Expo (push notifications), Netlify (our website and its waitlist form), PostHog (product analytics, without advertising identifiers; PostHog may not use it for its own purposes) and Sentry (error reports from our servers: the type of error and where in our code it happened, never your account details or what you typed). If you connect Google Calendar, Google receives your viewings (the time, the room's neighborhood, first names) to show in your calendar.
Authorities, when the law requires it or to protect someone's safety.
A buyer or successor, if Liv is ever merged or sold, under this policy.
How long we keep it
Until you delete your account. Deleting it removes your profile, photos, room, lease, answers, likes, matches, contact fingerprints, your Sign in with Apple link (we also ask Apple to revoke it), your Google Calendar link (we also ask Google to revoke it), your viewing times and bookings, your place in any household and your roommate-agreement picks, your ID-check consents, and the messages you sent (except copies kept with a reported chat, below). When you delete your account we ask PostHog to delete your analytics data, including your events, and we keep retrying until PostHog confirms it no longer has you; PostHog removes the events in the background. Otherwise analytics events are kept for 13 months, and the rooms you opened (for Top Picks) for 90 days.
The people you chatted with keep their own messages in those chats, shown as a chat with someone who left Liv, without your name or photo.
Move-in checklist tasks you added, were given or ticked off stay on your household's checklist for the others, without your name attached. Viewings already added to your Google Calendar stay in your calendar; turning Google Calendar off in Settings removes your link and asks Google to revoke it. When you delete your account, your upcoming viewings are cancelled and we ask Google to update the other people's calendars so your viewings and name come off them, and your name comes off any household you started or invited someone to.
A deleted photo or file is removed from storage right away. Cached copies are gone within a day, recovery copies within 30 days, and database backups roll off within 7 days.
Reports about safety, including safety messages you sent us, and copies of reported chats are kept after deletion (without the link to your account) so we can protect other members. Purchase records may be kept as tax and accounting law requires.
If a chat is reported, we keep a copy of the recent messages in it from both people (up to 50 from the last 30 days), visible only to our safety team, for 3 years, or 1 year after we close it without action, even if either person deletes their account.
Your choices and rights
Edit your profile at any time. Turn mutual contacts and notifications off at any time.
Product analytics is on by default. Turn it off at any time in Settings → Usage Analytics. Our servers check your choice before passing anything on, so once it is saved nothing more is sent for your account from any device, including another phone that is already signed in; that phone stops and discards what it was holding the next time it tries to send. Using Liv does not depend on analytics.
Personalized Top Picks is on by default. Turn it off at any time in Settings → Personalized Top Picks: what was recorded is deleted and your Top Pick then uses roommate fit alone.
Download a copy of your data from Settings → Download my data.
Delete your account from Settings → Delete account. Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription; cancel that in your Apple ID settings or in Google Play.
Depending on where you live (for example California), you may have rights to know, access, correct and delete your information, and to not be discriminated against for using them. Email support@theliv.app and we will respond within the time the law requires.
Adults only
Liv is only for people 18 and older. We check your date of birth when you sign up, confirm your age with the identity check, and do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor is using Liv, tell us and we will remove the account.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit, private files (leases, ID results) are stored separately with restricted access, and contact fingerprints are keyed so they can't be reversed into phone numbers. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong passcode on your phone.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy we will update the date above and, the next time you open the app, show you what changed and ask you to agree.
Questions: support@theliv.app. Liv (legal entity name pending), Mailing address pending.
